What is accreditation in higher education?
Accreditation is a validation process in which colleges and universities assure prospective students and the general public that the institution meets specific standards of higher education.

Types of higher education accreditation

There are two general categories of accreditation in the United States:

  • Instituional acceditation evaluates the institution as a whole.
  • Specialized (or programmatic) accreditation evaluates specific progrms within the institution.

What is the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)?
The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is Resurrection University’s regional institutional accreditor. Degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions are evaluated every eight years to assure that the university meets the Standards ofr Accreditation, and to assure the higher education institution will continue to do so in the future.

Why is the HLC coming to ResU in march?
Every eight years, the HLC will evaluate and reaffirm Standards of Accreditation are being met by the institutions of higher learning. Resurrection University is at the point of the normal accreditation cycle in which it is time for this evaluation process to occur.

Who are the HLC visitors and will they talk to students?
The HLC is a peer review process, and the HLC Visit Team will be made up of faculty and administrators from other accredited colleges and universities in our region. Review team members may stop students in the hallway or invite students to discussions.

What do I say if an HLC review team member asks me a question?
If an HLC review team member asks you a question, you should answer it as best you can. You should be honest about your answer and you do not need to have the “right” anwers. It is not a test!

What specialty accreditation does Resurrection University have?
  • Nursing: The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Radiography: The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technlology (JRCERT)
  • HIIM: The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)

What does ResU’s accreditation mean to me as a student?
ResU seeks to maintain accreditation from various agencies to be sure to meet standards that assure quality in the educational experiences provided to students. Students who graduate from an accredited college or university are recognized as having the educational background appropriate for their degree. This may be particularly important for degrees which lead to licensure.
