Resurrection University is a breastfeeding-friendly university community. This means that we are committed to educating the learning community about the importance of mother’s milk for the health of the infant; providing policy to communicate rights and responsibilities of the breastfeeding mother and the university community, and supporting and empowering the new mother to meet her lactation goals while she is at work or school.
The return to work or school is often a barrier to new mothers continuing to produce milk for their infants. Family-friendly initiatives are becoming the norm for students and employees around the country. With overwhelming evidence of the importance of breast milk for both babies and mothers, ResU supports breastfeeding because it promotes public health and a healthy university community.
- The World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Surgeon General recommend only breastmilk for the first six months, and breastmilk with other food and fluidsthrough the first year or longer.
- Breastmilk is the optimal food for an infant. It is a type of “medicine” which offers protection against many illness and chronic diseases such as ear infections, intestinal illnesses, diabetes and obesity.
- The health benefits for mothers include protection against breast and ovarian cancer, type II diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
